Right so here is the start of my post. I am 21 years young who like most young adults want to fly the nest and live independently but in this day and age and my attitude to not wanting to rent has limited me hugely. After wanting to fly the nest since i started full time work at 18 i have thought about it a lot. I live an activly lifestyle and spend a lot of time outdoors, I also live near a river. BINGO i'll buy myself a house boat :D:D:D So here i've been since April working my guys off trying to save up roughly £40,000 to buy myself the canal boat i'd like. Here is a little breakdown of what I've been doing to bring in the extra £££

    Charity Shops

I work as a special needs personal assistant/ Learning support assistant which is my typical 9am-5pm job. One of the activities that one of the people i support like to do is visit charity shops :D One of the charity shops we visit is a warehouse shop which sell all clothes for 99p. As we walk around i do pick up the odd bargain or two which id'd thought id' share with you. I will also elaborate a bit more and defend myself as i dare say someone wont agree with what I'm doing regarding buying and selling from charity shops. However 99.9999% of you are lovely on here and will understand. :T

In the past two weeks I've been out 3 times to my nearby town with the person i support and had a rummage around some charity shops. I've picked up bargain shoes, games consoles clothes and odds and sods. Most will go on my local Facebook sales sites which I am very active in but some of the more specific items will be put on eBay.

    My Charity shop finds

These are just a small few of my chairty shop finds. I understand a lot off people don't have the time to look around chairty shops, research what is worth what then spend time at home clearing it then selling it. but i do and have built up quite a bit of knowledge on certain subjects, mainly clothing and video games.

Top left - ladies size 16 regatta outdoor jacket, I'll keep this until September time then advertise it on the local Facebook sites, any outdoor make sells and it's in great condition, it will go in a vacuum bag along with other winter bits to be sold then. cost £1 - What i could expect to sel for £10 Middle top - new with tag weird fish T shirt. This has a tag saying £20 on it, i would advertise for £15 adversing it as new with tag on facebook. paid £1 - What i would expect to sell for £15 top right Rocha John Rocha men large jacket. this would be between £80£120 new, cost me £1 in excellent condition i'd expect to this to sell for £15££20 The PlayStation two cost me £7.99. Notice the sticking out part at the back, that is a network adaptor selling for £25 second hand as it is The console would sell for between £15-£20 on a local facebook site and the other controller would sell for £10 on ebay. Cost me £7.99 - I'd expect to sell the lot for £55 The green vans will be kept as they only cost me £3!! £3 for a pair of like new vans, they're a £50-£60 pair of shoes!! Absolute bargain. I didn't like the shoe laces on them so have since changed them to white laces. Absolute bargain. the man behind the counter said he had only put them out 10 minutes ago!! The Craghoppers outdoor reversible trousers which also have a zip at the knee to be changed to shorts cost me 50p, i would expect to sell them for between £10-£15

i've just quickly added up how much PROFIT i would make from the £13 I would have spent on items i'm selling and if i got what i would expect to sell them for and taking out postage/paypal/ebay fees on items i'd have made .. £80 for what i'd consider to be very little work. it would be even more as i'd include back into my savings the £13 i spent!!!

    Boot sales

Will edit after i've had a break, this typeing is harder than it looks :p
    Free Stuff

Since the beginning of my saving scheme in April I've been telling people of my savings scheme and i'm always talking about canal boats and my successes in selling people have actually started giving me stuff that they would otherwise chuck away to sell on Facebook to put towards my canal boat idea. I have quite a lot of friends/family friends who have given my the odd bit of furniture to sell, books etc, i've got on family friend at the moment who is moving house and has probably given me the best part of £1000 of second hand value stuff for me to sell. I even just this afternoon met up with a lady for the second time who i met in a bar, after telling her the first time of what i was doing and giving her my number after i told her i was taking anything people were chucking away/ no longer wanted. She brought me a 1940's rotary watch, a silver bracelet and a gold plated bracelet. The generosity of some people is amazing!!!

  • Brilliant post, Azzzaa:T. Looking forward to the next installment:beer:

I agree, the generosity of people can be amazing. The lady who gave you the watch and other jewellery items being the perfect example.

Living on a houseboat sounds wonderful:T. It's so different to the usual ambitions people tend to have that I'm not surprised that people want to help you to achieve your dream.

    Good Luck:beer:

Yep, great post Azzzaa! I do the same when I have time, but you've outlined it far more elegantly than I would LOL!

I have no problem with the charity thing. The way I see it, you're still giving money to the charity in question and are a repeat client, bringing them regular income. Like you, I do understand when not everyone sees it that way, but everyone in getting money at the end of the day and therefore, everyone is benefitting.

Re: free stuff, we were given two, beautiful white beds recently that didn't turn out to be safe enough for my little one to move into (metal with bars etc etc). The owner was determined to tip them if no one wanted them so we took them, later deciding they weren't ideal and have sold both on with permission. So another £40 added to my total for selling the second one this week :)

During my first pregnancy I discovered how expensive and hard to come by decent maternity stuff was. I made a roaring profit buying huge bundles of stuff (usually selling at silly times on eBay so with very few bidders) and selling on anything I didn't like or couldn't use, and the rest afterwards. Even bought a cheap pregnancy mannequin to display items better and gain 50% more profit on them. I've done similar this time around - although I'm a bit tighter on time with an 18 mth old to look after already. I highly recommend the use of a basic mannequin if trying to sell on clothes. It makes a HUGE difference to profit and they can be picked up online for about £10-15, sometimes less.

Great point about the use of a mannequin, Surfchik. I didn't realise you can buy pregnancy mannequins (although it certainly makes sense that they're available). I learn something new every day on this thread:j.

An Italian friend used to sell gorgeous clothes on eBay years ago. She brought loads back whenever she went 'home' to Italy and they were really stylish and unusual and just photographing them on hangers didn't do them justice. So she got friends (including me) to model whatever garments were in our size and then cropped our heads off the photos so we wouldn't be recognised (at our request;)). The pics looked a bit odd somehow, with arms, hands, legs and feet showing but nothing from the neck up:rotfl:. I don't know why she didn't invest in a mannequin or two, she could certainly afford it from selling those lovely clothes that often caused bidding wars and that she had picked up very cheaply in Italy at charity-type/secondhand stores in posh areas.

I'm with you on the ethics of buying from charity shops and then selling things on. After all, the charity shop is getting their asking price (what they think the stuff is worth). After all, they got the stuff for free so any profit is brilliant. It's not like haggling at a car boot sale when nobody ever wants to pay the asking price however cheap it is:eek:. I often think some people buying my stuff at car boot sales are planning to sell it on at a higher price but if they've paid me what's acceptable to me then everyone's happy. Good luck to them if they want to put the work in I say. I could easily have put things on eBay etc myself but sometimes it's just easier and more convenient (to have ready cash straight away and no packing and posting to do) to car boot them. It's win-win all round in my book.:j

    Morning everyone

Well done to all the money makers, especially Azzzaa. It's nice to hear of someone your age who has an ambition and is willing to put the effort in to achieve it - and to appreciate that it will take time!

I have £130 to add for a table and chairs we sold. My DF has been moving out of his rented place over the last few days. We have taken lots of things to the charity shops and the dump that we had intended to car boot but just ran out of time. I'm worn out and got completely soaked yesterday going back and forth to the tip. Need to get moving again now though cos still lots to do!

    Have a great weekend everyone

Made £10 from selling stuff on Etsy! and picked up £3 from a survey website. So thats just under half way for my target for this month. I'm quite pleased as thats £2.50 a day. I know I wanted to make more but I've not been very proactive so I'm quite happy! Still a few days to go! Good luck everyone

  • I was thinking the same as you, shariann, that it's really quiet on here:(. There are sometimes pages of fresh posts each day but just recently hardly anyone is posting anything:eek:. I expect people with young children are going to be very busy this coming few weeks. I'm glad you're posting and that you're making some great sums too. Well done on the Cash4Clothes:T

Well done to everyone else who is still making a big effort to finish the month on a positive note:beer:

I was rained off car booting both Saturday and Sunday morning so no profits made whatsoever this weekend:mad:

Sold a couple of cheap books on Amazon last night but the money probably won't be in my bank account before Friday so I'll have to use it to start off August's profits.
