Paint spilled in back of rental van

Hi all,

I've been really stupid and not packed some paint properly in the back of a rental van and the tin spilt over and must have cracked but there has been splashes of paint along the back.

The van is pretty immaculate to be honest, 15 plate with just over 1000 miles on the clock so the back was spotless before. Now i don't want to lose the deposit and almost certainly the rental car rep will have a quick glance in the back so i wanted to ask if people have any experiences with this sort of thing and tell me how strict they are.

On the one hand, i think that it's a van and they should expect some manual labour and heavy goods to be moved in a van so some damage such as scraping is inevitable while on the other hand it's a brand new van pretty much and they will want it back immaculate.

I have washed the paint but it is too far in and there are stains left and also sanded a bit which just makes it look like bricks or something have been in it causing scraping. I am having a completely crazy idea to paint the base of the van the brown paint that leaked onto it (mad i know!)

here is a link to the van but please note it makes it look much worse than what it is

I don't think they should be surprised. You don't hire out a van and specify that it should only be used for carrying foam rubber. That is why vans are boarded out.
  • I wouldn't worry about that. If the make a big deal, offer to go and buy them some nice new 9mm ply from TP.

Unless a previous renter had a similar problem and had already thought the same!

Is that wooden panel easily removed? I assume the 'cunning plan' mentioned above involves removing the panel, turning it over and then fixing it back in place.

Why don't you call the same company but a different branch on a speculative enquiry and casually ask about it?

AFAIK it won't matter, it's only externals that matter as inside is designed to be battered!

You may be giving them too much credit, when it comes to an opportunity to charge the customer, they rarely miss a trick.

I recently hired a van from Enterprise and when I was being shown the condition the agent said that they weren't bothered about the condition in the back.
