been able to do it myself given the time it would have taken me a damn sight longer

Completely agree , Us diy'ers are never going to match the speed of those who do it every day. Takes me hours to find all those specialist tools . I know that I have .......somewhere. But it might have been a couple of years. I recall buying too many 'spacers' then, and I have stored them ....somewhere!

If you need it done tomorrow, go professional. If next week will do, diy.

Its not so much the costs for me when it comes to DIY. That I can take my own time and address any issues as and when they appear in the job, can only be added to experience in the learning curve.

Its true that today the majority of teens cannot even wire a plug, when that has to be the first steps in learning how to wire a socket, a light switch, so forth and so on.

If there is a particular job I can't do, (which is probably plumbing if I am honest) I might hire a plumber albeit I will take note of his work and turn it into a challenge.

The more confident I am in what I can do, the better I become at it. Without a doubt all those DIY jobs I have completed, particularly a semi to professional looking job, fills me with a sense of achievement and pride. Its well worth doing it yourself sometimes ;).

Now I think the one 'black art' that has been made so much easier over the years is plumbing. We started off with 'end feed' and the solder leaked everywhere. Then come the yorkshire , fittings overnight looked better.
And compression gave us the ability to start again.

Now we are playing with plastic, costs have come down .

My dream is easier plastering ........now thats always a challenge and I have made a real mess.

I have been phobic about plumbing as I had a disaster when I was 16 in trying to surprise my Mother by plumbing in a washing machine, the simplest of jobs. I had opted to remove a stopper on the inlet, ensuring I had turned the mains off first of course. Not that it helped, as this stopper came before the stop tap, With no way of turning off this fountain that emanated from this pipe, I succeeded in creating a swimming pool throughout the house.

I did succesfully repair a washing machine in my 20s. I got a book from the local library (long before tinternet), stripped the whole machine, and found a blockage in the pump. ;) I guess thats plumbing in a way. :D

I did my first plastering only a few Months ago, we had just moved in and one particular wall was built by Jack. Of whom had managed to plaster over wallpaper, as well as a gaping hole behind that. Its not too difficult a task, just have patience and be sure to really press hard and smooth and you'll soon clock it.

The trouble with DIY tiling is it really is one of those jobs that can stand out like a saw thumb if it is poor. Saying that though, even some professional tilers are crap.

People think painting is easy too, and look at the state of some peoples houses, paint everywhere :money: :rotfl:
