Does my washing machine sound normal?

Hi,

Bought a Bosch washing machine last year, and got it out and fitted a few months ago. It washes my clothes so it functions but it is very noisy on the spin cycle (its maximum spin is only 1200rpm) so I've uploaded a video and looking for some advice as to whether it is normal or not.

around 1'33" for maximum spin or enjoy the entire 2'26"

If you could offer your opinion that would be great, not sure whether to get an engineer around to take a look as it's still within guarantee.

Regards,
J

Which model is it and how long have you had it?

I have a very similar model machine to yours, except it spins at 1600rpm. It does make the same high pitched noise as yours - I've found this to be a trait of Bosch washing machines. I find the longer the motor has been used, especially with labour intensive cycles, the motor does sound high pitched - I assume this is down to heat.

The first thing I am concerned about it how it gives a short 1200rpm blast for about 2 seconds before stopping. Mine happily spins at 1600rpm for 4-5 minutes.

The second thing that bothers me, and that I would mention to Bosch, is the knocking sound you can hear sometimes. I mentioned it to Bosch and they replaced the shocks for me. This solved the problem, but not for long - but at least I have peace of mind that the shocks have plenty of life in them.
  • Sounds like it's about to take off.

  • You have removed the transportation bolts?

You only have to look at the how the drum moves to see that the transportation bolts are not holding it to the machine's chassis. But I don't see how the transportation bolts would cause the high pitched noise.

thanks for the reply, it's a Bosch Exxcel WAQ24461GB, bought it last year, but only just installed it as I hadn't moved in yet. Probably been used 10 times so far.

Did you ask whether it was normal operating noise when the engineer as around or did you not think it was a problem?

Does the warranty have enough time left on it to allow you to test it a few more times? I ask this, because I suspect the brushes are stilling bedding in on the motor and the motor can sound high pitched or tinny while the brushes wear down to the shape of the armature.

The Bosch engineer didn't really indicate whether or not the knocking was normal. But him replacing it tells me that either perhaps he didn't think it sounded right or replaced them to keep me quiet. :D

In the meantime, if you have any whites that need a good hot wash, run the machine on a 95c cottons cycle at full spin speed.

Our 5 month old Siemens (same company) has just done a spin and sounds exactly the same at 1200 rpm, 1400 max spin. I wouldn't worry about it.
