Lloyds TSB Cheque Book for 17 year old!

Options
My friend who is 17 has somehow obtained a Lloyds TSB cheque book, along with a Visa Debit -the same as mine. I was wondering really how he managed to get a Cheque book out of Lloyds TSB; I asked them about it, and they said that they don't offer the service! I know his parents have a mayfair banking account (i.e. Lloyds Private), so maybe as a sort of 'extra' they have got him a cheque book?? I am certain that he wouldn't lie about his age etc to obtain it, and it is all above board. The cheque book is in his name.

Sorry to post another new thread, but i'm a bit confused!

It's not really a problem, I like the barclays package, but prefer the Debit from Lloyds because i can buy train tickets with virgin, who wouldn't take my Electron card.

Thanks again.

I had a (then Lloyds Bank) cheque book at 16, and when I got my first part time job, they also furnished me with a cheque card. Nothing terribly unusual happening here I would say.

  • Hi

Do you want a debit card from Barclays so that you can buy train tickets?

    If so,.....

Are you the same IAMORGAN who has some money to invest before they go to university?

If so, could you mention to Barclays you have these investments in other institutions (that you can't get hold of or you will get penalised), and on that basis, as you have some assets, please could they give you a debit card?

And yes it is entirely possible that the parental account helped. However that would mean that a member of staff made the decision as opposed to a computer. I thought staff didn't have much input these days.

In terms of the account, did you ask at the same branch as where your friend opened the account? And if you do ask again, you could also mention your assets/investments.

No, I use a different branch to my friend, but when I opened my account with Lloyds TSB last year, the Assistant Branch Manager told me that there was no way that they would issue a (then) 16 year old with a cheque book, she said the ONLY person who could authorise that type of thing would be some type of ?regional manager? as the process of issuing cheque books is automated in the system, if your DOB is registering in the system as you being under 18, then the option to order a cheque book is not available.

Yes, I'm the same IAMORGAN, and explained it to them, they wanted some proof of this money, and said if I would invest it with them, they would issue me with a connect card (vs debit). I have also spoken to Lloyds who stick to their assertion that they cannot issue me a debit card, but pointed out that they are the only bank to issue a visa debit for under 18s.

Its not a big deal, i was just interested in the system, I suppose that rules can be 're-interpreted' if you flash enough money at them and know the right person.

Thanks for the info, it was just a question, as I didn't see the cheque book as an advertised thing for the account, and to be honest, i want to close some of my accounts because I have a Natwest (balance £0), HSBC (£0), Barclays, which i use to pay for driving lessons, but i keep the balance as low as possible because 0.10% is low, Lloyds -about £30 ATM, Nationwide Flex (£150) and Nationwide smart (c. £3,500), plus i also have savings with Bradford and Bingley, so i really could do with closing some of these accounts, which are empty, and making a decision.

But from my position, i would say that my favourite product overall is the Barclays account, they just seem to have the best all-round product and the best service.

How long ago are we talking? I suppose a reason could be that he's had the account for years, and maybe they issued a chq bk before it became LTSB (don't know when that was), but I know that they don't issue cheque book for under 18s norally.

Ditto, same time same age, just before I started my 'A' levels they gave me both a cheque book and guarantee card. My parents had several TSB (as it was then) accounts for many, many years, so perhaps that was why. I would have thought perfectly possible if you can show you are sensible I would have thought...

When I worked at Lloyds, we gave out cheque books at 16. We used to give out cheque guarantee cards at 16 as well if the parents were of good standing and banked at the same branch.

    1994...now I feel old!

It was a "Headway" account, and I had to sit down for a chat with the branch manager before I was issued with them. Because I had a good standing with them by 18 (i.e. I had 2 years with their £50 cheque card and cheque book) they issued their debit card (with £100 cheque card) straight away on my 18th birthday and gave me a £50 overdraft.
