Repercussions of insurance cancellation?

Hi,
am in a bit of a fix hoping for some advice.
We were having building work start so I contacted my insurance company. After a while they told me they couldn't cover that so cancelled my insurance! is this a bad thing? I'd've thought being honest with them was a good thing but never expected this.
Now we have tried to get other insurance and it's proving a bit tricky, sadly I only had 2 days' notice and so now we're not covered due to the number of queries they keep coming back with.
It was inferred to day that because my insurance was cancelled this will put up my premium. Seems unfair, is this right?
Also, now I have not been "continually insured" (?), do I lose no claims benefits?
The only lesson I can see from all this is that I shouldn't have said anything at all until I had new insurance in place - but how was I to know my current insurer wouldn't cover me?
Hoping for some clear information as to what this all means and what my next best move is :-(
Thanks in advance
Dan

Your insurance was cancelled because of the change in cover required.
You should not be mentioning this cancellation to other insurers as it isn't due to your action/default etc
But if you now have no cover then you clearly cannot claim any period of continuous cover if asked about this in respect of NCD0 -
Basically you have cancelled the policy as you had the choice of not doing the building work and continuing the policy or doing the building work and cancelling the insurance. As a consumer driven cancellation there is no need to declare it.
The same argument doesnt hold true if you "decide" not to pay for your policy and its cancelled for non-payment.0
