I work in fire safety so have a reasonably informed position.

The California Bureau of Home Furnishings has been setting the standard in this area of fire safety for a very long time. However, if you look at the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire Safety) Regulations, there are no 'deemed to satisfy' dispensations for materials which meet an equivalent foreign standard. The materials either pass the British Standard tests or they don't.

If you use this sofa, you will be in breach of the Regulations, even if the Californian tests are more stringent.

Yeah I thought that would probably be the case so thanks for clarifying.

Push the boat out and buy a new sofa from the UK.

The cost of a second hand sofa (anywhere) isn't much so I'm wondering if it was financially worthwhile shipping a second hand sofa half way round the world.

Yeah I know but already have the sofa available to me here rather than having to ship it over.

For anyone interested, I did contact FIRA and they confirmed as per some of your comments above that there is no equivalence given to overseas countries (ex Ireland)......so even if those regulations are stricter than the UK ones it would still be in breach of UK 1988 Act.
