refused a mortgage

wondered if anyone can help me.
iam buying my council house and have got a broker helping me find a mortgage, everything was going ok and we had the surveyor round from the lenders .it got refused because there is [according to him] a few empty properties down the street. theres one.
should this reflect on me or is it a excuse .do you think thats the real reason.
i've looked on the internet and the only reason why i can see a mortgage is refused is because of poot credit. but my broker advises me this isnt so..
could any one else offer me any more advice on this matter thankyou.

poor credit is the most common reason but there are other reasons. if the lender believes that empty houses will effect the security of their lending then they could well refuse you. another reason could be blight.

is there any reason why they could refuse you based on poor credit rating? if there is then thats probably answer to your question, otherwise it could be something else.
