Stripe vs Paypal

On my website I've always offered Stripe and Paypal.
The payment take up seems to have switched between the two, with customers now paying more with Stripe than Paypal.
I can't fathom out why. Is this just a quirk or has anyone else using Stripe noticed it?

The fee structure is pretty much the same for both. The biggest difference is that Stripe has a 7 day transfer wait. So if someone pays by Paypal I can withdraw to bank instantly, with Stripe it appears (without me bothering to go through any process) in my bank 7 days later.

I'd read the reviews on the aptly named Stripe before you fall in love with them too much

I offer payment by credit card via Streamline and Paypal. When the proportion using each method changes it sometimes indicates a problem with one of the payment methods, so that buyers fail with one so try the other. With my shop this shows up as duplicate transactions with a few failing until finally one succeeds. In my case this has been errors transferring addresses from the shop to the payment provider. By the time I try to sort out what is happening it resolves itself and remains a mystery.

Do you have analytics set up on your site? Can you see failed payment transaction attempts?

I thought there might be a Paypal fault, so checked that. Still getting Paypal payments and not seen any errors showing up or any changes on the payment pages that would direct to Stripe.

I'm not getting that many transactions so it could well be a quirk of my customers.

I've never said I was "in love" with Stripe, just that I was using it. I wouldn't expect anyone who handles credit card payments online to not have complaints against them. If they do, they probably don't get anyone using them or they've just started.

On sites that accept paypal, I usually enter my card details as a guest rather than log into my paypal account. When it transfers to the paypal site to complete the transaction, sometimes the guest option doesn't appear, and I have to go back and select it a second time to get it to appear. I also think it doesn't make it massively obvious that you don't need a paypal account to make a payment, so for anyone who doesn't have a paypal account, it may be offputting.

As I understand it, stripe allows the card details to be put in directly, so some may perceive it as a simpler way of making payment.

Yes. That was one reason I used it, it seems more straightforward to non Paypal users. Now I don't sell on Ebay, I use Paypal less as a buyer.
Any payment method I can offer that doesn't involve upfront fees is worth a shot. As far as I can see no one knows they're using "Stripe" and are just using a secure payment channel on my website.
Perhaps customers think they're costing me less by not using Paypal.
