Charged for missed direct debit

Hi
I have been charged £16 for a monthly minimum payment direct debit that was returned unpaid.
I am still waiting for my current account to explain why the credit card payment was declined but in any case, Egg credit card has said in two separate emails it will not refund me my £16- it would be unfair on other customers it says.
I have pleaded with Egg saying that as my loyalty to Egg extends to 5 years and I have not previously had such a charge, to extend a goodwill and remove the charge. As stated, they refused.
I said I would have to then think about taking my custom elsewhere. I was just interested in your view on this - I thought credit card companies were trying to retain customers?

You say that you are loyal to Egg but what would you do (as I would) if a better offer came along - that's right you would jump ship.
You need to sort out with your bank why the d/d was declined. If you miscalculated then fine - accept that you were wrong and move on.
If the mistake was a bank error get them to refund not only their unpaid fee but also the Egg one.0 -
No, from many posts on here, it seems that they are doing the opposite! I know what you are saying, but if it is a Bank error, claim back from them, it may be easier, and you would not want to be a hate figure for all the other Egg cusomers, would you??I thought credit card companies were trying to retain customers?0 -
Agree with both of you ...
but five years ago, I remember being pestered by Barclaycard with 3 calls over 2 days pleading with me to stay.
The difference though apart from the time was my spend on Barclaycard was nearly 5 times more than on Egg - it might be a different response if my Egg spend was higher ... thanks again0
