Infrequent computer hangs and live chat

Since installing Windows 8 (fresh install), my PC tends to freeze every couple of days. Usually there's no apparent reason for it, and WhoCrashed doesn't identify any problems.
I have realised now that using Live Chat seems to cause the computer to hang on most occasions in the same way. I don't use them often but after around a minute of a session the compute freezes.
Based on this, is there anything I can try to stop this from happening? I assume Live Chat uses some sort of plugin which may be causing the issue?
Thanks for any help.
