Normalisation of AAC audio files...?

I have some AAC audio files that I want to put on an old iPod. The only problem is that they play at different volumes.

Is there any software I can use to normalise the files... And can this be done losslessly (without decoding the AAC and transcoding again)?

Cheers in advance for any suggestions :)

iTunes has a facility to analyse and 'normalise' AAC files. Menu 'Preferences' and select 'Sound Check' under 'Playback'. Recent devices running iOS also have the 'Sound Check' facility but your old iPod might not have it.

As above, it adds a tag to the AAC that is similar to replay gain. Failing that use Audacity and it's normalise function.

Audacity will transcode when the files are imported (losslessly) and exported (lossily).

Yup I know, that's why I said failing . It depends on the bitrate of the original, if it's 256kbps the human ear will not know the difference.

Unless the files are Apple lossless they are lossy anyway :D
