is a credit card like a current account in that you can spend more than your limit (not by a huge amount- just a few pounds) and the payment will go through and you will be just be charged or something and pay extra when your next statement comes through?

Yes but why do it when you will be heavily punished?
Much cheaper to give them a call and ask for a small increase in limit.
If they say no - they will mean no. Don't chance it or you could find your card consfiscated next time you try to use it.0
