How do people stay motivated to keep going and pay of their debt.

I've been on a DMP for almost five years now and with another 19 months to go staying motivated plays a huge part.
I have spreadsheets where I can chart how far I have come and what's left to go (all colour coded:o). I use percentage paid off and keep this on my signature.
I set smaller milestones along the way, with almost 46k of debt it was very daunting at first and seemed such a mountain to climb but by breaking it into chunks I'm able to reach my goals along the way e.g. 70% paid off, number of debts under 2k, 1k etc.
I read the DFW threads, I join in some of the challenges e.g. Saving a £1 a day for Christmas, NSD'S, clothes challenge. I find this makes it a challenge to see how thrifty I can be;)
I have a diary which I try to update at least once a month and I look back over the last 5 years to see how far I have come. From the depths of despair to looking forward to being debt-free and all the ups and downs along the way.
It's been quite a journey for me but it's one that I will carry on for the rest of my life.
I wish you well, plod on, it will be worth it!
Take care

Ive been in mine for about 5 years now and have another 6 to go

The £200 a month I pay on my DMP is just like a normal bill each month and is probably the best way to look at it. Thankfully I already have my own house but in the near future I know my housing status is going to change (larger house required) and thats when the DMP will restrict my options greatly. Thats when it does play on my mind but to put it bluntly - its tough luck.
I am pretty laid back anyway which I suppose helps not get too frustrated about my debt situation.0 -
Thanks everyone for the ideas to keep me motivated. Ive started reading Mr Mustache blog which I am enjoying. I think I will look at doing a spread sheet and a pie chart to show how much I have paid off.Emergency fund target £12,000 (£2589).
