How do people stay motivated to keep going and pay of their debt.

Hi All

Just wondering hoe people keep themselves on the right track track to pay of their debts. I had my LBM on the 2nd Jan this year so it has been almost 6 months but feeling a little impatient as still have around 16-19 months to go. Any comments appreciated.
Emergency fund target £12,000 (£2589).

    Hi!

I too can feel a little impatient, but I always try to stay focused on the end goal. Maybe make it visual (watching numbers go down is good) or I just try to stay inspired by reading Mr Money Mustache blog and by listening to Dave Ramsey podcast everyday, keeps it exciting!

I just kept plugging away, making money saving part of every day life - keep a record of what you save each day and tot it up at the end of each month. It became a challenge in the end to see how much I could save/earn.
My LBM was 2008 and we are now debt free (post husbands bankruptcy - business related) and in a position where we do not need to constantly scrimp and save. The core money saving skills are still part of our eveyday life now and part of our children's education as i dont ever want them to end up as we did.

Keep your chin up and looking at your signature be proud as you seem to be doing really well.

The start of any great adventure begins with a first step, then you just go to keep going until you reach your goal. If the goal is not inspirational, real and tantalising you wont get there.

I have a pie chart and it's great watching the portion of paid off pie get bigger every month. I also read other people's stories for motivation and also think about the future and the things I will be able to do once I have no debt.

Ooooh I do love a spreadsheet. :rotfl:
  • Percentage paid off, I like that

    goes off to update spreadsheet
  • Good question, I battle with this too. Sometimes it feels like 3 steps forward, two steps back. This month I've had an unexpected vets bill and unexpected dental bill. Does my head in!

I come on here for motivation and stare at my spreadsheets daily. I am paying the final payment to our credit card this weekend and I strangely don't feel as elated as I thought I would. I feel numb and find this odd.

I get worried that I'm so desperate to clear the debt and mortgage that I'm wishing my life away. I'm down to under £3k for the unsecured loan attached to my mortgage and feel as if it is so near yet so far off from being cleared. To stay motivated I wake up every day and think of the five people in my life that mean the most to me. For them I struggle on and tackle the day ahead and don't give up.

Keep on going, you've started the debt free journey and one day you will finish, we all will!

My motivation comes from reading the debt free roll of honour, what an inspiration it is knowing that others have gone through what we are going through and being debt free is possible
    August 2010 debt was £12605
    May 2016 debt now £280
