oil fired boiler service??

Hi,

I am in the process of buying a cottage, which has an oil fired boiler the survey, said it smells strongly of oil so needs checking out. The vendors say it was only installed a year ago but have no paperwork to support this at all???

I have asked them to have it serviced as they cant give me any details on the firm that installed it etc, but they say they will only have it serviced between exchange and completion, this sounds a bit dodgy to me cause once we have exchanged if the service does bring up a problem,I can see real hardship getting any money off them towards the repair?

So I am thinking of getting it serviced off my own back ,does anyone out there have a oil fired boiler that could give me a rough idea of serving costs ,it is in Norfolk by the way.

Thanks

hmmm i would be careful if i were you. If they had installed a year then they would know who would have done it. Oil fired boilers are a lot more expensive to repair then normal gas ones.

So personally i would get them to get it service before u exchange! , as they say buyer beware....

Generally, an oil fired boiler only needs servicing annually.

If they will service after exchange, then it should be relatively simple to have something inserted into the contract regarding the cost of any work e.g. the vendor will arrange for the boiler to be serviced, at their cost, by a registered OFTEC engineer and will, furthermore, meet the cost of any work required as a result of that service.

As it's a new boiler, make sure that any associated guarantees go with the boiler and not the person who bought it. It should be under guarantee as should any work done by the engineer who installed it.

A new boiler, installed and commissioned, should only cost about £2.5k so any remedial work (if required) should be far less than this and, possibly, "zero" depending on any guarantees already in place.
