PC World (Store, not online)

Hello,
In November 2004 i purchased e eMachines Computer (being a newbie to the I.T world i didn't know better!) and the PC World 5 Year Performance care with covered the PC's screwing up.
Within one year the computers CMOS Battery broke on March 2005 and they fixed it at the aunnual health check on November 2005.
Now once again the CMOS Battery has died (last month)! They didn't fix it at the annual check up which was last week (i didn't think to tell them, i mean it is obvious!).
So i called PC World to tell them. After talking to a nice lady who didn't have a clue what i was going on about and had to get advice of another colleague!
Now an engineer () is coming on Wednesday.
Just thought id share my experiance. I also nearly got forced to buy Norton 360 after finding 7,000 virus and some spyware! Funny, i found none when i scanned before giving them it...
*Rant Over*
Thanks,
Andy.

For future reference, a CMOS battery is extremely easy to replace yourself. It is literally one of those watch/button type batteries you can buy in the high street. Usually a CR2032 I think but you should be able to see it on the motherboard. So unusual wording to say the "cmos battery broke" as batteries simply die, they don't "break". You should be able to buy them for something like a quid each. Probably cheaper than actually travelling to PC World and back. Sounds like PC World have been making out it is something special and a bigger job than it really is. It really is no different than changing your watch battery except a pc case is easier to get into than a lot of watches.

Well at least you know what to do when the engineer (I hate using that word for these people, makes my engineering degree feel worthless) messes it up.

Take the battery out before he gets there, see what he does.

I bet he stares inside for 10 minutes trying to figure out if it's supposed to have one!!
  • My Opinion of PC World has changed from Bad to OK...
The "TechGuys" came today (well, 1 person in a car with computer parts) and went inside my computer and put in a new battery! It was a quick 10 minute job for him and he was actually nice.:A
So i'd like to Praise PC World for doing something good.

  • if you break the "seal" & replace the battery yourself the warantee may be invalide

Most companies operate an open case policy and when tested in court it was found this kind of thing does not invalidate the warranty when companies claimed it had because pcs are designed to be modular, repairable and upgradeable etc.

superscaper, tell me where you get the cr2032 for £1 go to tesco or asda and they are about £2.50 I think the last one I bought for 2 for some kitchen scales.

AndyGrey, your very easily satisfied I can't beleive it took him 10 minutes to change a battery. Did you make him a brew or somthing? that 5 year warrenty seems decent value now doesnt it after having 2 £1 batteries replaced ;)

Ohh and the claim the pc had 7000 viruses o peices of spyware how long did they have the machine? I have been to a site where the adaware scan found 4500 and it took 4 hours to clear them, the spyware caused the pc to run that slow it took an age to sort it out.
  • pc world sucks!!!

    so does norton.

    just stay away!
