My son wants a laptop and I want to know if I can run this and my own computer from the same ISP.
If so will I need another modem?
Also will we both be able to go online at the same time?
Thanks in advance.

Can I suggest you buy a router?
They're not TOO expensive (30 - 50 quid for a decent one) and will allow up to 4 computers (on most routers) to connect to the same internet connection simultaneously.
I use one for my 4 computers, and it does a wonderful job!
Mine's a linksys, and I can highly recommend it.0 -
What modem do you have at the moment? uits possible it may already support more than one user.
If not you can buy a router or wireless router. Most of these have 4 physical connections (so you can connect 4 pcs or laptops) however if you go for a wireless one then the number of possible users over wireless will be a lot higher.
Worth changing to a router even if you don't need the extra user capacity as they are often more reliable than USB modems and should give you a better connection0 -
You mentioned laptop so I'm going to suggest a wireless router as everyone seems to want to go wireless these days!

If you use ADSL/DSL like BT, Bulldog, Tiscali etc.. then you want to get one of these: http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/90975
Otherwise if your using cable such as Virgin (previously NTL,Telewest etc..) then you will need one of these:

Either way a router is what you need, it just depends on the style of connection you have.. who is your ISP, as usually a call to customer services will get you a free router/wireless router

Modem is a Voyager 105, not wireless I'm afraid0

BT Voyager ?
How about the laptop the wish to use, is it wireless capable ?
Firstly I'd say speak to your customer services and see if they will give you a wireless router.
If not, and you are BT then go for something like the first link I posted.
The modem itself doesn't have to have wireless built it, the router uplinks off of the modem and then enables wireless access.0 -
ISP is plusnet0

Yes then that is ADSL if you've been a customer for a while they will probably give you a router/wireless router, otherwise thats what you need to get
