Giving a spare key to letting agent?

Hi,

Finally putting my house out for rent but the letting agent wants a spare key. Worry is, I am still living in the house and thus all my possessions are still there and I'm not really happy giving strangers keys.

They said they need a key to show people round when I’m not in, which I totally understand. Do they give a receipt or something to say they have a key to the property?

Call me cautious :p

My EA agents had my keys for several months - and to be honest with you if they wanted to nick anything, I'm sure that they would have nicer houses to nick from than mine. I guess if you want viewings when you aren't around then you haven't got much choice, but you can always say to your EA that you want to do viewings only when you are there, therefore theres no need for them to have the keys. But to be honest with you I think you will get fed up with this and if you really want to sell your house, you will give the EA's keys as if a potential buyer can only make "X" time, which I found, you may lose out on a buyer if you don't hand over some keys to the EA's. Their interest is in their commission, so I doubt you will have any problems.

You can always ask for a receipt if they don't give you one - which they should anyway. I got my keys back at the weekend and had to sign for them on return.
