Employer Error overpaid

Previous employer is requesting a payback of overpay.
My husband received a letter back in May from a debt collection company stating that his previous employer was requesting he returns a payment of over £500 which he apparently received in November. After sorting out the room yesterday I came across the payslip from the month that he was supposedly overpaid, in which it stated 'Gross Pay: £0.00'.
It stated on the payslip that the hours worked came to the sum requested along with the typical holiday pay etc Coming to a total of over £1000. But along with that there where deductions totalling the same amount, hence the nil gross pay. Yet the employer are requesting the pay back?
How do I go about this as he didn't receive any money from the employer at the time stated on the claim?

Write to the former employer and request details. Unless the employer has written to you previously about this they have no reason to employ a debt collecting agency. If the overpayment was a genuine error by the employer I am afraid you would be liable to pay it, however if that was the case you would have every right to ask to pay for it in small instalments.0
