I'm just not sure how I'd feel having something 'inside' me. I keep imagining I'd be able to feel it.

    You won't feel anything.

Goodness, nothing like scare stories is there.

I have no idea what this 'stench' is, have had 3 fitted now, have never given birth vaginally, my husband can't feel a thing (although my cervix isn't in the normal place anyway) and I haven't had periods for the last 13 years. Whats not to like.

I'm sure if you google bad effects of 'Novasure' you'll get scare stories for that too.

    Edit:
    Yep, there you go

The only advice I would give, is that if you're not sure about which would suit you best go for whatever is the quickest to reverse. If a coil/mirena doesn't suit it's out in a jiffy, the pill youy can stop taking and it won't take too long to get out of your system, other methods such as injections you're stuck with until they run out. Not sure about Novasure, but that sounds pretty permanent?

I have also had the Mirena coil, in fact I will be getting it changed for a new one shortly. Not particularly looking forward to it, but I think that it fairly normal. I have had no children and it was recommended to me after a problem with me and the implant (continous period)
Had no issues with the Mirena, BF hasnt either ;)

Also i remember it not being very confortable to have it put it, but it wasn't that bad, and the doctor offered me a nurse to hold me hand which was appreciated (i am a complete wuz!) just took some paracetamol after and had the rest of the day on the sofa with the duvet, tv and a cuppa!

I've been on Cerazette/Cerelle for 6 years and I've only had a handful of periods in that time.

I briefly tried a Mirana coil after my daughter was born and I got an infection shortly afterwards, so it was removed. I'm still not sure if it was the coil or childbirth that caused the infection.

I also had an Implanon implant for three years. The first year was great, no periods at all, but I had fortnightly periods for the second two years which lasted a fortnight each.

The family planning nurse always asks me about long-term contraception when I go for my bi-annual checkup but I always tell her I'm happy enough on Cerelle.

I tried the mirena for over a year and a half and just didn't get on with it at all sadly. I was desperate to be one of the ones who didn't have any periods on it but no such luck. I am glad I tried it though and it seems to be a bit of a marmite, some love it and some hate it. Doctors aren't keen to take it out too quickly, usually they want you to try 6 months, and I even had to really push mine to take it out after 20 months!! I had gynae problems pre mirena so I wasn't totally surprised it didn't help. I've also never had children, and insertion wasn't too painful, they recommend taking 400mg ibuprofen an hour beforehand. If you're going to need something for contraception anyway then it seems like it would be a good thing to try.

I had a T-Safe copper coil fitted about 12 months ago, to avoid taking hormones after quitting the pill years ago, and it was categorically the worst thing I ever did to my poor body. From day 1, I had every side effect going: constant nagging pain, ridiculously heavy periods, sudden water retention, sleeplessness, nightmares, mood swings and depressive states, acne, anxiety, weight gain, poor concentration, terrible period pain, headaches... But worst of all was the extreme fatigue and 'brain fog' some attribute to copper toxicity. Most mornings I couldn't even wake up and when I did I was completely useless..

In Dec, I asked for a Mirena instead and instantly, the nagging pain disappeared, periods have lightened to nothing, and the tiredness has just about worn off. I'm losing weight again, and finally feeling like a normal person. I've never had children, and I won't lie: fitting it did *really* hurt, but then I did forget to take painkillers and it's only a few seconds - if Mirena seems like your best bet, don't let the fitting put you off.

Of course, some women report the exact opposite with copper coils being great and Mirena awful, and like you I'd read enough scare stories to realise that everyone reacts differently - the bad experiences are the ones you'll hear most about, while positive experiences will go under-reported. So here's one more vote for Mirena - for me it's been completely problem-free.
  • I had the Mirena coil fitted about three years after my first child and went on to have another after it was removed.

My opinion, having the Mirena was the worst 6 months of my life. Fitting it was easy and painless but I bled very heavily for the next 13 weeks, had thrush continuously and felt like my cervix was trying to push it out. It was checked and rechecked, the gp refused to remove it until after 13 weeks I insisted it had to go, it then took a further 3 months before the heavy bleeding stopped.

I've briefly taken Microgynon since the birth of my son nearly 3 years ago which was fine but now don't use anything as another pregnancy would not be a problem for us. I'm 39 by the way.

Yes, I had one of those before my first Mirena, the result is 14 years old in July!

I miss my Mirena. I loved it but have had LLETZ treatment and the scarring means I'd have trouble having another fitted :(

Currently have Nexplanon - had no issues for the first 8 months but hate it now.

Am currently awaiting an appointment with GP to discuss Skyla - a new and smaller coil. I can report back if you like? :)

I've never heard of Skyla. Just googled it and it sounds better, size wise at least. I'd really appreciate it if you could let me know what you think after your appointment. Feel free to PM me too. It does sound like it might be the best option for me. :)
