new car battery
I bought a new battery online for my Hyundai i30, 2009, 1.4 petrol. The original battery has a flat top and the positive connection has a plastic safety cover. The new one I received has recesses around the terminals. The plastic protected positive connection will not fit on the positive terminal.
I asked the supplier about this and they insist the battery is ok and the plastic cover is not required on a recessed battery. Is this correct? Surely the cover is on the connection for a reason? Please advise. Thanks.

The cover is there to protect against idiots and to stop the terminal shorting on the bonnet in cases where there is little clearance, cars didn't used to have them at all.
I'd imagine they're also partially to discourage people fitting not manufacturer bought batteries, therefore driving more business into the dealership network.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

As Strider says, the cap is just to prevent accidental shorting on batteries with raised posts. That's not an issue with recessed posts (or with competent users!). In fact, it's rarely an issue more than once even with incompetent users cos a short tends to be pretty spectacular and reminds you not to do it again
.
So no problem at all as long as the battery fits the holder, secures properly, and the leads themselves will fit the recessed posts.0 -
Cheers. Will give it another go.0
