Is the path really fystem32? Does that folder really exist within the Windows folder? ;)
The HOSTS file you identified as the correct one lies in C:\WINDOWS\fystem32\drivers\etc
I also have replaced the s with an Olde Englishe f, but why does the forum ban it (and indeed destroy your post at the same time?:))

you've been given several options, alternatives and workarounds, why not try some instead of asking more questions, you are also over worrying about the importance of post sp3 updates, not surprising with the constant upgrade marketing aimed at the public, but you're running an old o/s without updates now, and nothing bad has happened.

it takes a second to rename the host file, problem solved.

Funny you should say that, I've just discovered that Bitdefender Antivirus free edition (installed a few months ago) has turned itself off, and the switch on the console can't be moved back on).
I'm going to have to do that reset...

that will take a loooong time ;)
Why? I'll only have to install Avast, Chrome, 3MobileBB and Trusteer. And maybe reinstalling Lexmark will get by X1150 printing again :)
If you meant identifying non-system files and saving them on a USB stick well, surely there's software that will do that?

Factory settings may not ben any better than it is now.

I spent ages decluttering my daughters Toshiba laptop. So much junk and so many bloated programs and trial versions of stuff.

Why does it take a removal tool to get rid of all traces of Norton? Why doesnt it uninstall itself cleanly?

I've found a site that thinks it has the answer to that problem. It states 'That's all there is to it! What would normally take you weeks, hours or days of research and downloading is done in mere minutes'
I has the shortest URL I've ever come across: http://xdot.tk

Trusteer? That's one reason why it's slow. ;)

I knew Trusteer has that reputation but my PC is so slow that I couldn't tell the difference after installing it. :)
Think I might as well uninstall it anyway as I don't bank on XP anymore and I already have Zemana Anti-logger Free.

You're slowly indicating post by post why it's slow

hosts file, rapport, antikeyloggers, there's a pattern beginning to develop of things you don't need.
