Although this doesn't answer your original question (think the Avios route sounds best for you - if you like lounging it up you could love taking annual biz class flights) I've got a good little trick for you. Refer your partner to the Gold card and you'll both get the sign up bonus. Then get a supplementary card on their account and continue with Gold and racking up the points for another year. They'll get the bonus as long as they haven't had Gold or Platinum Amex cards in the past 6 months. If you do go the Avios route, you could combine your current points and their sign up bonus and get a nice flight somewhere. And if you want to level up more, think about the BA Black Card which gives you a companion voucher after 10k spend in a year. Which, with 53k MR earnings in a year seems possible from your spending. Et voila, lots of miles and biz class flights long haul.

Thanks, sounds like a great little trick. Neither of us are particularly huge spenders, but if we use the Amex for all our spend then there's plenty of bonus to enjoy IMO.

Just to clarify, by BA black card, you mean the BA Amex Premium Plus, right? that's what I've just received and am yet to start using. Presumable the same thing - also has a free companion ticket after £10k spend.

For me the free companion ticket appears more "valuable" a reward than 53k MR points, for example.

Need to be careful with priority pass though, it's been declined for access at Birmingham twice for us in the last few months. Lounge say they are full and won't allow you in, first time they said pre book, but when we tried to pre book they wouldn't accept and/ or wanted £20 each as well.

Despite being confused with which card to get, this thread has more or less opened my eyes. I'm not going to stick to one and the same card each time.

Instead I am going with Gold / BA Premium Plus on a 6 motnh or 12 month rotation, depending on how much spend I have coming up during that period.

Hopefully it will mean maximum BA miles and/or rewards in this way plus a companion flight once every now and then.

Yeah that sounds like a good plan. I think a £10k spend for companion ticket is something that can be achieved. And if I rotate cards with the other half, should be enough reward to keep it worthwhile

The 53k MR points can come in handy when converted to Avios - as the Amex 241 can only be used for an Avios redemption and not a cash booking.
  • Always convert my points into BA avios! But there are so many options with Amex gold.

Sometimes they have deals on so you get more avios when you convert. So I hold on to my points until a deal comes out
