You're still liable for the debt, you can't just hand back the keys. In other words, any other equity you have is at risk.

One of my Brothers handed back the keys and some 10 years later Bristol & West caught up with him (he had only moved home once) asking for £52.5k. He settled on just £2k arguing he had a family to keep etc etc.0 -

After that length of time, they were probably glad to get something rather than nothing.
However you cannot extrapolate from that one anecdoate about other circumstances and other lenders.0
