I am the registered owner and policyholder of said car.
Insurance is due for renewal on 5th July.
I want to give the car to my child. Is the best way forward for me to put it on a SORN on the 30th June and send off the log book and for them to insure and tax it from the 1st July? I just don't see why the government should have almost a months worth of tax from me unnecessarily.

Sounds like a fair plan; I don't see any problem with that. Make sure you keep the SORN receipt.0

Your child can be the primary driver whilst not being the registered keeper, especially if the registered keeper is a family member.
It might cost a tiny bit more on insurance, but you'd need to check.
So there's no reason you can't just have their insurance policy start when yours runs out (you'll need to explicitly cancel the renewal).0
