we did send the letter we got off the bank to the company and they reply was 'we are not responsible for the charge'

If your card is covered by VISA or MASTERCARD, contact your issuer and explain, they will arrange for negotiations to refund.
If under Direct Debit, you can use the Direct Debit Guarantee scheme to recover erroneous payments!0 -
as I Perseus said, if its a DD talk to your bank and explain that the direct debit guarantee says that you are guaranteed an instant refund
If by card, the most common way of this happening is when the person behind the till swipes your card twice. If this is the case point out to that company that it is their error, and ask to talk to a manager and explain to the manager what has happened. Also talk to your bank. Ask them to refund this charge as a gesture of goodwill. ya never know, maybe you'll get paid back twice0
