Hi,
I've got a HL 1070 printer that someone gave me thats had a new toner cartridge fitted. It was ok at first apart from a thin dark line down the side,(I can live with that) then one day I had a paper jam but managed to get all the paper out but now all the prints come out with a very dark background.Maybe a coincidence that it only happened after paper jam.I've removed toner cartridge and shaken it gently and cleaned the leds inside as suggested by the previous owner but now have run out of ideas so wondered if anyone has got any others.Could it be the 'Drum'?

A line down the page is almost certainly a mark on the drum unit, as excess toner gathers in the mark and is then transferred to the page in the form of a vertical line.
As for a dark background, that could easily be a number of things. I couldn't find the HL-1070 on the Brother web site (are you sure that's the right model number?) but lasers are all pretty similar. Their site suggests:
Please check the following points:- Make sure you use paper that meets the recommended specifications.
- Check the printer's environment - high temperatures and high humidity can increase the amount of background shading.
- The toner cartridge maybe damaged. Put in a new toner cartridge.
- The drum unit maybe damaged. Put in a new drum unit.
