M&S car insurance

I had a policy with M&S for my car. With two months left to run (at £24/month), I bought a new car. Using a comparison site, my quote was £19/month, speaking to M&S insurance directly, the quote was £29/month.
When I told the rep that I would go with the online quote, she told me I would need to cancel the policy and pay £50. Now, to let the policy run would cost £48, and as there are some non-car linked benefits, like KeyCare, I'd rather let the old policy continue even through I don't have the car. Can I do that?

Remember you cannot have the NCD on 2 policies so if you dont cancel the old policy you have to buy the new one with 0 NCD
Secondly, if the old car is still insured by you then you are still potentially on the hook for any accidents its involved if the new owners dont get proper insurance on it. Not only that but as you will have allowed a person not named on your policy to drive the vehicle then your insurers would be able to reclaim any claim from you personally.0 -
Why not just tell your existing insurer that you want to change the car insured and then get a different insurer at renewal time? That is what most people do.0

Both the old and the new policy are with M&S, and they are aware that I no longer own the original car. They would not let me change the policy onto the new car, I had to restart a new 12 month policy at the higher rate, which is barking mad. They have allowed me to transfer the NCD over.0
