alamo car hire

we're going to florida on 1st sept (1st time)
thomson include a voucher for car hire with alamo
question is: is it cheaper to use this than book directly with a competitor
i'm expecting lots of extras with the voucher use. (insurance, cdw, other driver, petrol) so after adding the costs of the extras (unknown) is it cheaper getting an inclusive car from an alternate?

Normally I'd expect you to be able to get a better deal (and probably a better car) by booking direct. The extras of the insurances etc are a nice little money earner at the rental desks. The agents will try and sell you anything and everything, But you will need CDW/LDW and SLI as a minimum.

Check by putting your info intoi one of the comparisson sites like Carrentals UK or Travelsupermarket who will give you an idea of the prices that you would pay booking yourself. Most of these sites will include all the insurance you need although check the excess that maybe chargeable. You can get additional insurance if you want to repay you any excess that you are liable. Ask if you need the links, although Carrental will quote for this as an extra via themselves (ie not the rental company you reclaim on return if you incur any excess insurance charge)

the cost is coming in at about £170 for two weeks

in the end it cost me £38 pounds
i arrived and the rather helpful chap at sanford alamo asked if i wanted to upgrade from economy to compact (said no as they don't stock economy cars) agreed to the AA type cover and he 'gave a complimentary upgrade'
he clicked the boxes that gave CDW etc so two weeks car for 38 quid
    :)
however, didn't have any change when we approached an unmanned toll so couldn't pay the 50 cents and am expecting a $100 dollar fine to follow :(
