Okay, My sis and I have decided to take advantage of the exchange rate and do some shopping in the US. Will only be going for a couple of days. The problem is that she has set her heart on New York-she's into Sex in the City! I will go anywhere that has the best shops- ie outlet malls, Walmart etc.
So, does anyone suggest the best area, state or whatever to go for shopping? Will prob be buying:
Ds Lite
Maybe a laptop
Clothes (we are plus size so don't need no skinny shops:rotfl: )
perfume
other stuff
I would prefer most shopping locations to be easy to get to on foot
Thanks

Hi
Sorry i cant help with where to buy these items, but i would bear in mind the limit on the value you can purchase out there, think its £145 per person and it cant be combined.0 -
Hi,
I can only talk about Orlando. When we go we always buy loads of clothes, shoes, Golf clubs etc.
I always remove all the labels and wash them so they don't look new. I read somewhere on here that it is a good idea to mail the receipts to yourself. I have never done that but seems quite a good idea.
I doubt anyone going to Forida ever sticks to the limit though when you go around the malls etc it is all Brits!
Hope you enjoy it, I love it!

Century 21 (beware the gloomy assistants though!)
And then bus yourself to New Jersey and raid Avenue Plus in the shopping mall! You don't pay tax on NJ, as opposed to NY, and the stuff is around the same high quality of Anne Harvey - I'm wearing a pair of their jeans right now lol and they're still going strong 18 months later and cost me about £8. They also sometimes have vouchers for % off in the local rag, or they give you vouchers once you've bought something so make sure that you go back more than once!
Try here for more details http://www.avenue.com/ (and no, I don't work for them, just adored the shopping experience)It aint over til I've done singing....0 -
Thanks guys. My main concern was that NY may be geared toward sight-seeing rather than shopping, it doesn't matter now though. Have deided to defo go, 5 days poss 7.
Main thing I need is flights. Need to fly from Manchester- pricey? Both Virgin and BA have great prices flying from London, but then we will need to get down there. It works out at £335.90 each- thats seperate flights from Man-LON and then LON-NY.
Can anyone suggest any alternatives, have been on Delta, they have a flight that changes at London, but says something about terminal change- how tricky is that?
All your help is gratefully received. Oh, flights are for me, my sis and my daughter:beer:0 -
As mentioned above, New York has higher sales tax than nearby New Jersey, so many New Yorkers will cross the State line to do their shopping. Do bear in mind that transport is not free, so try not to make that journey more than necessary.
However, New York does offers spectacular shopping, perhaps aimed at people who are so wealthy that the odd ten per cent tax is meaningless to them. Perhaps these shops are better for looking than for buying...
New Jersey is sometimes called the garden state, and so might be worth a visit in its own right. It includes Newark, which is a major gateway airport for New York.
Don't forget that you can get very cheap trains between Manchester and London, so long as you book well in advance.0 -
When do you want to go, you've quoted prices for some flights, but no dates, so it is difficult for us to search for you.. I've found flights leaving MAN - LGA via BOS, for £299.89 with American or DIRECT from MAN to JFK with Delta, for 5th Sept - 10th Sept (5 Nights)
And yeah, this needs to be moved to the NYC thread..

Markymoo- the dates I am looking at are 13 Dec to 17 Dec (4 days) although the price that comes up for it is the same for a week. My sis is trying to sort out time off work so the four day option may only be the viable oneat the mo.
Also, I am trying to find really cheap accom, I have had a look at the one you recommend but it is a little pricey. What do you think of hostels- when taking a 6 year old?0 -
my dd got a ds lite from the usa
she said the ones here were around the same price. then she had to go to an electronics store and get an electricity converter.
her friends bought lots of nice clothes.0 -

what is your budget for a hotel. like normal, i'll recommend the reasonably priced cosmopolitan hotel, and you could get a room with 2 double beds.. hostels are not my thing. You could get a cheaper hotel than the cosmo, but would probably end up sharing the bathroom with other people on the same floor.. new york has something for all budgets..
i'm not an expert on holidays with children, (single, solo traveller), so maybe someone else might answer that slightly better than me.0 -
I do USA a fair bit, and I feel that you have chosen quite an expensive idea, just for shopping.
I have booked to leave on 16th Dec, but did it several months ago, so got cheap flights. In the lead up to Christmas flights are more expensive.
New York hotels are also expensive.
If you just want shopping, fly to Chicago or Atlanta in November.
Both have mass transit systems.NO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!0
