HI, Hope that someone will be able to advise of help with the following:-
I currently have a Speedtouch 546 cable broadband modem connected to the telephone line configured with the isp provided IP address. After this a firewall is connected then a network. I would like to attach a wireless router(netgear DG834G v3) to the Speedtouch modem and use it as a free internet access connection without security for clients. Could someone please advise on how this maybe done. Thanks in advance

More specific details required.
The Speedtouch 546 is not a "cable broadband modem", it is an ADSL router.
What firewall is connected after this Speedtouch?
Why don't you simply replace the Speedtouch with the Netgear wireless router? Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Hi espresso,
Thanks for your reply.
I have a cisco pix firewall. I will swap the routers over as a last resort but where the speedtouch router is located is a fair distance from the room that the clients will be accessing it from so will probably need access point also.
I would like to connect one of the speectouch routers Ethernet port to the patch panel and connect the wireless router near where the clients will be accessing the Internet from.0 -
You don't really need a wireless router then. You could simply connect a wireless access point to one of the ports on your Speedtouch and locate it where you need it. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

If I connect an access point to the router would it cause any problems if it still issues DHCP. I have a server that issues DHCP but the access point will not be part of the network.0

There should be no problems connecting an access point to your router. You may have problems if you connect another router to your existing router regarding DHCP. The access point would be simply providing wireless capability to your current router. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

Hi
Have tried connecting a wireless Netgear dg834g router and a Netgear access point with no success. Because the netgear hardware does not issue DHCP an IP Address can not be obtained. I want to separate a wireless access point from my existing network is there an easy way or does anyone now of a website with instructions and the best way to do this?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

I can only assume that you have not configured your Netgear router and access point correctly then, as DHCP should not be an issue. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

Most routers / access points will allow you to enable DHCP via the web interface.
I take it you are connecting this outside your network (in front of the PIX), something like below?|-----| Wireless |-----| Guest Network| -----Internet-- |Speedtouch|--- | |-----| Pix |-----| Your Network |JoelFreeBSD | Microsoft | Linux Nerd
GNU-PG Key-ID: 0xCBC2F26D

Hi Joel,
Thanks for your reply. Yes that is the way I would like to install the wireless network.
Can you help with the config?
