Child Benefit and starting work

Hi,

My daughter is 17 years of age and in full-time education at College. She has now been offered a job as a Care Worker - but the work seems to be on a 'Bank' or even zero hours contract - no work is guaranteed and no idea if and when the employer will call her in to work.

I read that we will lose child benefit if she leaves full time education and 'starts paid work for 24 hours or more a week'

Bearing in mind the above, she will not know if she will work any hours on a given week, let alone 24 hour - so, the question is - will we lose child benefit?

Why does she want to leave full time education for such uncertain prospects?
  • the answer might be for her never to work more than 24 hours and carry on with her education

These bluddy zero hours jobs should be outlawedand banned.

My grandson came from down South, someone company gave him a zero hours contract but for the first months they gave him 40 hours, then 20 hours, then 10, 15, 10, he had no set hours, housing benefit for the low weeks came 3 weeks after claiming and he ended up getting evicted.

Tell her to finishe her further education and maybe get a part time job on a Saturday and a couple of night etc. She wont be doing herself any favours......
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

If she was born on or after 1 September 1997, she can't leave education or training until her 18th birthday, unless the job she takes is an apprenticeship or she's studying substantially alongside it.

    That should be or.

I.e even if she leaves education and doesn't work at all you would lose it.
