I use it wirelessly (although I could run hundreds of metres of cable around the house if I really wanted to)
Only 100 metres on RJ45

Is there any way to do it without a router as not sure OH will be too happy about it (he seems to be trying to prevent DS usage) which is why I have to sort it out.
That doesn't make sense. You say he has been given a modem by his Dad, yet you write that his DAD doesn't want him to connect to the internet. Sort it out.0 -

If you actually read the thread properly I refer to my OH and my sons dad. Your comment "Sort it out" is rather strong and somewhat offensive. Unfortunately I have not had the 'perfect' life but I do know the difference between my OH and my sons dad!
OH is not his dad, DS is from from 1st marriage and there lies the problem. OH and DS dont get on very well as DS has got older. This is why I want to try and get DS access via the phone line in his room so that he doesnt have to involve OH's PC.
Phone line is obviously the same but I cant incur any additional charges, and bless DS, he even got a broadband modem. Now obviously I'm no techie but I cant understand why I cant logon through same phone line using same account. (OH has set up AOL so that I can be on it at home and he can login to it at work at the same time !)
I'm not worried about restricting DS access as AOL have age settings wich are appropriate.
Any help would still be very much appreciated preferably without Donnie's unhelpful comments.Mortgage, we're getting there with the end in sight £6587 07/23, otherwise free of the debt thanks to MSE help!0 -
ahem.. did you ignore mine for a reason cos it'll do exactly what you want.

The best way to do it is using a router either wired or wireless so that both can use the AOL broadband enabled line at the same time!
How could you use the phone line "without incurring any additional broadband costs" ?
It would be possible to set up your sons laptop with the extra modem using the same log-in details but this would not be ideal as only one modem can be plugged into the line at any time, leading to obvious problems/conflicts with your OH.
Basically you need a router to share the connection sensibly, which is why they are so common. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

Sorry I didnt ignore you, you were suggesting a router as well and if I'm honest I dont know what one is.
and to espresso. We have AOL broadband which gives us unlimited network use for a set fee. I thought if we were using the same line coming into the house with the same login, we've already paid the monthly fee etc ......... thats where my lack of knowledge makes it start to fall apart.
Thanks for all the replies. Looks like I'll have to discuss a router or wireless network card with OH. Wish me luck and thanks againMortgage, we're getting there with the end in sight £6587 07/23, otherwise free of the debt thanks to MSE help!0 -
A router is what AOL give to their new customers, hassle them and you may get one for nothing and reduce your monthly payments! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

best way to describe it for your scenario... it's a multi user broadband modem0 -

Hmmm...I can see you're a bit sensitive. But seriously, this is a Techie forum, not a 'make sense of your various abbreviations for your family board'.
You may know the difference between your OH and your son's dad, but I didn't, prior to your post.
So how about you get over yourself and your overblown feelings of offence? We're not living in the USA.
Anyway, the other posters have pointed you in the right direction. You may even already have a router.
Otherwise, I agree with espresso. If you've been signed with AOL for a while, call them to renegotiate your contract and get a Router chucked in.
Whatever you may think, we are here to help.
Post the brand names and model numbers of your existing modems.
We'll be able to check the capabilities of your existing equipment.0 -
We have a wireless router from BT. It's downstairs where we have a desktop. My ds is 2 floors up and it works fine on his pc too. It also works for dh's laptop wherever he may be, even out in the back garden. The Wii and Nintendo DS's also work off it. It's a wonder I even get a look in to be honest. We've never had any problems with it, touch wood.

We've now got a BT hub but haven't taken out of the box yet. Not sure what to do with it though. I know it has an internet phone and that's it. BT phoned us up offering it and saying our monthly charge would be cheaper and we'd get a faster connection so it seemed stupid not to take it. Dh willl also get 250 minutes each month on his laptop when he's away from home. Does anyone know if it's any good?0
