I have been setting up a new laptop (windows 8.1) and creating shortcuts on the desktop to some of my favourite sites. Some show the sites logos (MSE, Google, Yahoo) but others just have the blue glove icon.

Any way to have the icons show the logos?

To change a web site shortcut icon try this (works for me on Windows 7, not sure about Windows 8):

Right click on the icon you want to change and select Properties

Select the Web Properties tab and left click on Change Icon

In the box Look for Icon in this File, type C:\Windows\System(32) - omit the brackets when entering. I have had to express it this way to avoid this post being blocked

Click Browse to open System 32 window, scroll down and select IconCodecService.dll

A pop-up will appear stating “The file C:\Windows\System(32)\IconCodecService.dll contains no Icons……..”

Click OK and the icon list should appear with a choice of around 300+ icons
