money to invest

im 50 years old
no mortgage and I'm debt free
had a windfall on ppi a couple of years ago. so got some cash to spare
I've probably around 40k in bank
11k is in my isa and I've not put this years allowance yet,
the other is mostly in regular savings and online only accounts all with nationwide
i had a pension that was frozen in 1996 when i took redundancy and started back with same company ( long story )
I'm still with the same firm but stupidly i never took a pension out when it was frozen and so i lost out on 19 years saving
got one now when company automatically enrolled everyone recently
apparently its a ok one
now what i want to know is whats best way to invest my money
was thinking gold coins or bars.
or should i look at shares bonds etc
at the moment part of me says invest long term as i don't need the cash or should i say i don't want to keep buying gadgets and start eating away at it
but I'm worried if i invest long term and something happens that i need lots of cash then I'm snookered
althouh most of my wages are being saved
just one other thing
if anything should happen to me then everything would go to government , there is only me and my mum and she's 89
there my girlfriend but as we are not married she would loose out
i want to leave everything her should the unthinkable happen
i thought if i had all gold then she would be able to sell it and not loose out
or should i leave it as cash and sort a will or give her my bank details just in case

Probably put more in to your (or another) pension scheme and get tax relief. You can then get at it when you are 55 if you want.
Put your girlfiend in your will!
Cheers

Deferred defined benefits? Increasing in deferment?
Expression of wish in favour of girlfriend?
Will in favour of girlfriend?
Consider stocks and shares ISA?
