i then tried to install the original disc for a game i have and it wouldnt install saying disc write error

i have Mcafee installed ( trial version ) and google said it does interfere with steam so i uninstalled it and uninstalled steam and then re-installed it and same thing happens

Have you checked the download path?

My sons new PC had a SSD for the boot drive and it tried to download his steam library the there as default.

Agree about McAfee, you may need to download the official removal tool to completely get rid of it!

Aye most installers try to put everything on the C drive by default.

I suspect Steam is installed to it's default location of C:\, but you can tell it to install individual games to other locations (you didn't used to, but it was always easy to move the entire steam folder and reset Steam to use the new location)

Google "moving steam library folder", get it set up to install on the largest partition. Also make sure your running as administrator, otherwise steam will give you nothing but trouble, as will VAC and Battleye and many other anti-cheat installs.

I turned off UAC completely in Windows 7, there's nothing worse than watching as a virus ravages through a system whilst your helpless to stop it because of UAC.

one easy way to avoid alot of issues like this is to not install steam to the default location in Program Files.

i just put it on a separate drive and rarely have any issues at all.

Program files on Windows 7 with UAC is a protected directory, and can cause alot of problems, especially for games.

this would also help if you are running a small SSD as well, as you can keep steam and all the games the larger drive
