USB 2.0 query

Hi all,
Just back from holiday and still a bit fuzzy headed so I hope I am clear in my query.
I bought an MP4 player while I was away (not a huge brand named one), but its usb connection appears to be 2.0 (hi speed).
On my laptop, i do not appear to have hi speed usb ports.
When I tried to sync music to the device, windows media player would not recognise devise. It worked on my mum's pc back in oz (admittedly it is probably newer than my laptop).
Any advice on what I do to rectify?
Do i need to purchase anything, download any programs???
Thanks in advance.

USB 1 & 2 are compatible, if you plug a USB2 product into a USB1 port it will work fine (just a bit slower than USB2) so I don't think that should be an issue.
Do you have the latest windows media player? If not the try downloading it (it's actually quite a nice player IMO). And that should do the trick if it worked on your mums pc.0 -
I am still having the problem.
I have got the latest edition of Windows Media Player but it is still not recognising my device, nor is it showing up as a removable item in explorer.
I have taken my MP4 player and usb cable to work today and it also works there. I have hi speed usb ports on my work computer.
Is it possible to buy a hi speed usb port hub and then attach it to my pc? would that work?

You can buy a usb 2.0 pci card for a pc
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/42657
for a laptop you'll need something like this
( a pcmcia card)
Note that some laptops have a slot which looks like this slot but is not!
(notably some Dell laptops)

Did you get a driver CD with the MP4 player? If you did, stick the disc into the laptop and install it. Restart, then plug the player into a USB slot. Windows will pick it up and recognise it then.
HTH.

I have done this Michael, but unfortunately I am still not having any luck with it.
Thank you0 -
Can you tell us what the brand and model number of the MP4 player is?

Michael,
It is just a generic one. Nothing too flash.
It just has Digital Media Player below the screen. It is a 2GB
I bought it in Australia. I have just tried to see if i can find it online but i can't.
Just confused that it worked on my mum's pc and work's pc without installing the driver but it will not work on mine even when the driver is installed.
That is why i am leaning towards the usb2.0 being the issue.0 -
What shop did you buy it from? They might have an online catalogue from which to identify it.
Is it switched on/batteries charged when you plug it into your PC?
Having said that, I think it's something to do with a Windows setting because it should pick it up as a removable drive at least.
Plug the player into your PC, then click on the My Computer icon on your desktop. See if there is an icon in there called 'Removable Drive'. Idf there is, then that means that the problem lies with Media Player not recognising it.

Michael,
I checked online when I was writing the last post but unfortunately it was not showing the item.
It is switched on when I plug it into my laptop. It charges the battery that way and that works.
I have checked through my computer and it does not show up there as a removeable drive, nor in explorer.
