My daughter received a phone call today supposedly from a TalkTalk representative. Who informed her that she had virus problems on her laptop and asked her to download some files to her laptop. She became suspicious when the representative requested asked her for bank details, which she refused to give. She said that she did not do online banking and the representative called her a liar, so obviously a nasty scammer.
I dont know what files have been downloaded, I told her not to use the laptop until it's checked over. Any idea what these scammers do to the system? and is it safe to continue to use the wifi in case some router settings have been changed?

There's advice on this sort of call on various websites such as Microsoft Avoid tech support phone scams.0

i had reason to ring Currys a few months ago and i was directed to another phone no, the person there asked me for £149 to fix a problem i had rung about and got quite nasty when i refused
I rang Currys back and they said it wasnt their policy to do this and must somehow have got through to a scammer0 -

Normally with these scam calls, you are directed to a website where you are asked to download a support program. If she didn't do this, you are probably OK. If she did, you could try system restore to roll it back to a point before the phone call.Je suis sabot...0
