    I think this is what people don't quite grasp, there is always a root cause, lack of maintenance and lack of actually checking the levels once a week, can lead to very costly consequences.......
    Or in the case of Rover/MG, cost cutting on HG material.

    The K-series started off and finished up with a reliable HG. It was the period in the middle that gained the reputation... Plastic locating dowels, IIRC.

    Maybe "almost always" ;) ? The head gasket failed on my old Humber through sheer age (37 years or so) - though very nicely decided to "burn through" between two cylinders hence just rough idling through loss of compression as opposed to coolant everywhere ...

    They're not a wearing part though, but they can be damaged by various "things".

    So for example, burning through might indicate lean running, causing cylinder temp to be too high.

    The wrong coolant type can literally eat away the HG and mixing types can cause frothing, which brings air bubble into the head causing heat spots and warping the HG.
    Old coolant can also turn acidic, which also eats away at the HG, the water pump, your hoses and gaskets/seals.

    I'm not saying there aren't HG failures caused through manufacturing defects, but most are down to other factors.

    I think we can rule out manufacturing defect or poor installation after 37 years.
