Developer now informed us our house is leasehold rather than freehold

Do you really want to own the freehold of a bin store?
The on-going responsibilities for maintenance and cleaning sound like a nightmare. You may well get ground rent and service charges from the users but just collecting these sounds like a headache to me.0 -
If they've sold it to you on the basis that its freehold, when it should have been listed as leasehold all along, then presuming you're still interested in purchasing it I would demand a rather hefty discount on the price.0

It's entirely possible they could sell it as a freehold but with covenants attached regarding the bin store.
However personally I would use this as an excuse to withdraw and demand your money back.
Indeed, we have just escaped from such an arrangement. Service charges for grounds etc but maint of the house was our responsibility. Never again. Service charges for the house were only slightly less than the nearby flats at £2400 a year.
