Easy Surface Preparation (ESP)

Has anyone had any experience, good or bad, using ESP?

I'm just about to start redecorating my kitchen and as much as I'd love them my budget won't stretch to new cupboards so I'm going to have to paint the ones I have.

I've looked into the special cupboard paint but all the reviews seem to be terrible.

I've read online about ESP which seems to mean you can then use any paint on the melamine but am wondering if this is too good to be true!

Just repainted all my kitchen drawer fronts and cupboard doors with Valspar Paint and Primer in one spray cans from B & Q I used a matt colour but the finish wasnt very durable so used a clearcoat from the same range. Dead easy to use and really good results. 6 doors 5 drawer fronts and two end panels one full height and one half height 3 each of paint and sealer.

Thanks - I did look at that but don't want to use a spray as it involves removing all the doors etc and I have nowhere to spray them.

Nikki we just finished doing our kitchen with ESP and Aqua gloss - here http://www.johnstonestrade.com/products/product-display/aqua-water-based-gloss

Great results and the paint went on very nicely. Too early to say if it will yellow over time though.

Make sure you sugar soap all your units before putting the ESP on.

PS bought it online as it doesn't seem to be in the shops

I used ESP years ago on kitchen doors. Painted over with ordinary emulsion (because of the colour), with a couple of coats of varnish on top.

Also used it to paint the drawer units in a bedroom. I used satinwood over the top for those.

    Both very hard wearing.

Thanks all - by the sounds of it ESP is the way to go - now I just have to decide between a satin or gloss finish!

Do you have any pictures of the units? I'd really like to do mine gloss but I'm worried I won't get a good finish and I don't want them to look painted iyswim.

I have to be honest - they aren't like the plasticised shiny units you can buy now, but that's fine by me as they show up every fingerprint which is very tiresome. The finish on mine is due to the rollers we used to apply so it's a bit textured. Suits me nicely though.

Will try to post a pic or two
