Washing Machine Help!

Options
My washing machine had been working until yesterday. When you put the washing in, it just lay there but the water came in the clothes did not move went through the whole cycle but the drum did not move. If anyone can recommend a tradesman from glasgow who repaires washing machines I would be really grateful been charged over the odds in the past with shoddy workman. Thanks

Hi Crystal, we are in exactly the same position as yourself (Hoover Machine) and i have carried out a thorough check on the machine ( had it out and in bits not something i suggest you do!) and believe it is the programme controller board that has failed. Considering the age of the machine and likely cost of repair the machines fate is sealed to be scrapped. When we have time intend looking for a replacement, then will check Internet for best price.

If you intend to go ahead with a repair check with neighbour's and friends for a tradesman recommendation and make sure you get an estimate first with the ability if your not happy with estimate to cancel before any work starts.

Thanks for your help I have actually had a new programmer in the past and thought it might be that again the timing is great i go on holiday next week. I have had this machine for 23 years old it must be about 8 years since I have anything wrong with it. Its a hotpoint any engineer I had out told me to get it repaired as it is a good machine compared to the ones they make nowadays it cost £300 trade price then, which was expensive. So hopefully I can find someone in glasgow to have a look first before I decide.

Will have to get someone out as being a female not technically minded. So if anyone knows of anyone in the glasgow area I will be grateful. Thanks.

Sorry, don't know anyone in Glasgow, but if it turns out that it is for scrap then you might be lucky on Ebay - my sis-in-law got a dishwasher for 99p, a washing machine for £5 and a tumble drier for £9.99, all working perfectly. Look for people who haven't put good descriptions or photos in, and items that haven't got the item location obvious on them, as nobody else will bid!

    Hi Crystal,

I am actually base din Kilmarnock but my repair business, where UK Whitegoods grew from, does cover all G postcodes. However they don't repair all brands, only the ones that they specialise in, the company name is NW Appliance repairs and you can reach them easily by using repairs@ on UK Whitegoods.

However, before you do that it sounds as if, basically, you've got no drum action and this is 99.99% of the time belt, motor or module related. It may be worth seeing if the belt is okay before getting anyone is, if it is it is most probably a motor or module fault. Obviously within that it could just be a set of carbons but either of the other options, depending on the make, can be expensive to put right.

If you're going to take a look yourself here's a basic guide.

had similar recently on our washer looked underneath to find that bushes needed replacing. Bought replacements locally for less than a fiver, easy to fit now as good as new, good luck.:T
  • I second what kroome said. My hotpoint, which will be celebrating its 17th birthday at the end of the month, gives the same symptoms as yours every few years - always the carbon brushes. A local retired engineer replaces them for me for £25, but I know I could do the job myself - the units come out really easy if you know where they are.

    Good luck
