Off to como for a week at the end of July - flying to Milan linate and plan to stay for the afternoon and overnight, but have no idea where to stay!
Can anyone help with some nice areas to stay, don't really want to pay more than £80/night so nothing overly fancy. Also, what's the best way to get to bellagio in lake como on the train from Milan?

£80/night is too low a budget for Italy in high season.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

Milan is normally empty at the end of July, the Milanese and more sensible Italians leave because of the weather. This year is different as Milan is hosting Expo 15 but if you must stay there a small 3 star hotel called the San Francisco close to the centre has which has rooms for under 100 Euros, just check out their website, its some years since we stayed there but as bed for the night it was absolutely fine.
In case you didn't know, there is no train service to Bellagio, there are trains from Milan to Como at the very southern tip of the lake or up the east coast of the lake to Varenna from where you can get a ferry across to Bellagio in around 15 minutes. There are taxis waiting at the station in Varenna but if you go out of peak suntimes, so early morning or late evening, you can walk to the ferry in around 15 minutes. It is all downhill but uphill on the way back and having been there a month ago, it can be very hot! Trains leave at 20 minutes past most hours to Varenna from Milano Centrale, more frequently to Como but it is a much longer journey by ferry or bus to Bellagio (bus number C30 run by STECAV Scarl.)0 -

Thanks, very informative.
Well yeah as we are flying there we'd like to see Milan for a night. Where is nice to stay?0 -
We did exactly this a couple of years ago, as we were flying into Linate we thought we would spend 2 nights in Milan before driving down to Lake Como for a week. We stayed at the Starhotel Echo, lovely hotel and a great location. Right near the bus drop off/pick-up from the airport, easy to walk to places and a good metro service everywhere.

We stayed at a place just outside the centre. Was definitely the cheapest in the locality and was really ok. Not fantastic but really good value. It was called the hotel vecchia Milano. Wasn't 4 star but very adequate and breakfast was nice. Great location Hope this helps0
