How terrible. Imagine having to bother to take a dog for a walk rather than just letting it out on its own for a couple of weeks. I'm outraged at your terrible plight.

so it's wooden ?? Needs a little shaving off the edge probably.
Ok so you can't open it by pulling the handle, but if you can get access to the outside, a wallop top and bottom, same time should shift

How would that help a jammed lock?

If I was you, I'd get a screwdriver out and take apart the handle to see if I could fix it. It could be that the spring inside the mechanism has come off or something.

I can't see how to get the casing off, will get hubby to look tonight.

    Nada666.

Thank you so much for your helpful comment. The dog is walked daily twice a day in fact. But being elderly he needs to go during the day too. And it's not just the dog that's my plight, I now only have one exit door, there is work needed to be done in the garden so the contractors can put up their scaffolding without obstruction, and last but not least I don't want to have to use my tumble dryer in the summer as I am skint and I can dry it for free in the back garden.

Suggest you call the HA back and remind them of their duty of care in regards to fire regulations and maintaining alternate means of escape.

    - I fully admit my knowledge on the duty of care the HA has is very limited, but i suspect so is the person who answers the phone. Sounding confident might do the trick ;)

I mentioned this as our kitchen is alongside the front door. And should there be a fire out exits would be limited, esp as the back garden is small so while we could get out we'd not be able to get far away. So therefore remain in danger.

But that's all what it's, and we've not had a fire in almost 20 years and I hope to keep it that way.

But when mentioned to repairs they just said no available appointments. Was going round in circles, I explained my concerns, she told me again no available appointments. I gave up!

I wouldn't dare attempt this but I will get OH to try later.

Have you tried pushing the door against the frame as you try to press the handle - our lounge door is slightly warped so once its locked it grips too tightly in the various positions. If we remember, a bit of Vaseline on the various locking points around the frame makes it easier for a while.

Yes I did try wiggling it but to no avail.

I think it's unlocked, but the handle won't depress and release the catch if that makes sense.

So it's possibly the handle that's broken rather than the lock??

Ring Shelter to find out what your rights are. It sounds unreasonable to me that you should have to wait so long for a door to be fixed, and as has been said above, possible H&S aspects.

Frankly as it's now 12 days away it's not a disaster, a pain in the you no where......absolutely, but that's all it is.
    It's someone else's fault.

Agree it's not a disaster, just a huge inconvenience. Was hoping there was some rule/regulation/law/legislation or even some guidelines the HA should be following that I was unaware of.

But yes we'll live, no one will get hurt, not even the children!!!

    Thanks for all advice anyway.
