Free no claims bonus

Hello everyone,

Yesterday I spent some time going through comparison sites for car insurance, and today I got a call from gocompare asking if I wanted them to check a price from be wise as they don't come up in the search results. This was for a new policy on a second car, and I have no NCB as I've always had either a company vehicle or been named as a second driver on my wife's car. She has. 9 years no claims on her policy. Anyway, be wise told me that they would take into account her no claims as I was putting her as a named driver, and that after the first year I would be given the same 9 years. I double checked what the guy meant and he specifically said that after twelve months, even if I then switched to another provider, that I would be given my own independant 9 years NCD, and that my wife's would remain her own and be completely unaffected unless of course she had a claim. Can this actually be true?!

Thank you in advance,

Craig.

Have you googled Be Wise or searched MSE or in fact any financial forum?

If not I suggest you do...

They will give you 9 years no claims after a single year? As above after you google their name and read all the negative reviews and nightmare stories you may have to take that with a pinch of salt.

Will they put that in writing?

Mirror your wifes 9 years no claims makes me wonder if they will put the policy in her name instead of yours?

  • Yes I have researched them and have read a lot of reviews on a lot of different sites as I have for every company I've considered (This does however get to the stage of feeling pointless as the vast majority of reviewers do so because a grievance has driven them to write it. Very few satisfied people feel compelled to write anything more substantial than "well priced", and it appears on forums that no company in the country is worth going with).

Anyway, the main query I have is the free no claims issue, I want to find out if a company can actually do that? If they can then maybe I can ask about it with other companies as I haggle for the best deal.

i think they are telling you porkies.

However there is one way to find out.
Ask them to put it in in an email/ in writing to you.

My money's on they don't and then you will know for sure they are stringing you along.

Directline do something similar, if I understand you correctly. Coming out of a company car they gave me a full no-claim right away on the basis of being a named driver on my wife's car.

The difference was the policy had to be with them.

And they make it very clear on your renewal notice that it is Named Driver NCD and not normal NCD

Prior to DL doing that and multicar discount they did used to just mirror NCD onto a new second vehicle as long as a couple of criteria were met and that came through on a renewal normally and so could be moved elsewhere.

To the OP - yes it CAN be true, NCD is not a tightly governed thing and for a host of reasons companies give NCD to people which can be freely moved to others. Mercedes offered to bump up my NCD if I moved to them when I got my new car rather than see out the remainder of the policy with Admiral Group.

Now, if Be Wise will actually do it is another question and whilst Ive never had any dealings with them there is online evidence that they are prone to over promising and then not delivering.

If you are happy to go with them, just ask them to confirm their offer in writing

As long as their confirmation is as stated on the phone you are in the pound seats!

Same advice should you be able to haggle it with any other insurer.

    Hi,
I'm a taxi driver for 4 years, still driving, and have NCB on taxi insurance.
I'm getting a car for personal use as well. When I take an online quote, can I say I have 4 years NCB?

You can only use NCD on one policy at a time so you'd (a) need to find an insurer that will accept NCD earned on a Taxi and (b) then change your taxi policy to have 0 NCD. Depending on the vehicles involved I would have thought the NCD would be more valuable on the Taxi.

If you do manage to transfer it into Personal Motor you are highly unlikely to find anyone that will allow you to transfer it back to the Taxi at a later date if you decided to go back to one vehicle or the economics dont work out having a low NCD on the Taxi.

    To the OP,

You were misled if you were advised that you were being called by GoCompare. GoCompare do not contact customers by telephone after a quote is obtained.

Once a quote is obtained, only the top 2 insurance companies on the results page can contact a customer and that is only if the customer opts-in to that service.

Be wise my friend. Be wise.....
