Why did they keep your passport? I have never experienced this in Spain.

If the money never left your account and was spent on other things, the bill will still be due. Do you have a credit card you could put it on or contact someone back home that could pay on their card in the interim
If the money left your account then this may be a hotel mistake but you will likely need to show them the evidence that you have paid. If you have no access to your account information you should try and get something in writing from the hotel that confirms you will pay the bill but, should you be able to confirm you have already paid you will be due a refund of the duplicated payment
Did you notice in April that you had more money in your account than you thought you should? Did you check the payment had gone?

I am assuming you are in a UK hotel?

Odd assumption as this is the overseas board :)

I'd call your bank and see if they did actually take the money and the date it was taken (if it was). You can buy a calling card from a gift shop in the resort to call the UK so it won't cost much to do so.

As it appears to be a hotel screw up, I would ask to use one of their phones at the reception desk.

I was more thinking it would be less embarassing if they money wasn't deducted to find out not under the eye of the hotel staff -especially if an additional overdraft needs to be discussed !

If you look at the back of your bank card you'll get the landline number of your bank. I'd ring them and ask them to check if it went out as if you have an idea of dates it's pretty easy for them to check

The same happened to me but a UK hotel. I paid for a two day stay just before Christmas (surprise present!) but didn't go until May. I had an email saying that it was all paid and we went thinking it had all been paid. I was then stopped at reception as we were to go to say I needed to settle the bill. Anyway, I argued that I had paid it and showed the email to them (I had taken it for the directions), but they said it hadn't work. I therefore went online to check my statements and sure enough, couldn't find any withdrawal to that effect and so kept my head low and paid (thankfully not an issue). I did complain that they could have notified customers if they had issues, but ultimately, it was my responsibility to check what comes in and out of my account. Thankfully, my OH found the whole thing very entertaining!

A lot of hotels will offer to "look after" your passport for you but they can't insist on keeping it. Your passport remains the property of HM Government so if they are refusing to return it then you really should let the Embassy know.

I have had this happen at UK hotels. If it is a prepaid rate I assume I have paid but sometimes they don't charge til I get there. Never had to pay twice, they have always been correct in what they say
