I just ordered a new sofabed from DFS yesterday and offered my AMEX as payment having seen the logo on the website. The salesman told me that this was not accepted though.
Has anyone used this card instore successfully? Maybe it is accepted online only?

According to Amex rules, this is not allowed if they display the sign. I would let Amex know by following this link to their site and selecting 'Yes':
https://www316.americanexpress.com/iFormsSecure/un/iforms.do?cuid=rapid_en_GB&evttype=0&evtsrc=link&face=en_GB&prod=Rapid&todo=view&appsrc=IFM
As for DFS themselves, I have no idea as I haven't shopped their in a while.0 -

They do take it just the sales people don't like it as they lose some of their commission. My advice is to push it and tell them you won't go through with the order unless they take it.0 -
I'd go with a different sale person and make sure he loses his comission because he lied.0

It was actually the "Assistant Sales Manager" that sold it to us so he should know better.
I only paid a deposit, the rest to be paid to the driver when it is delivered so I will offer my AMEX for that!0 -

I am not sure if the store displayed the sign but the website clearly does. I have emailed customer services for the official line on this.0 -
Looks like a close shave. At least your problem is before purchase, afterwards they won't treat you as a customer.
Find someone who does want your money.0 -
Finally got round to replying to customer services who confirmed they DO take AMEX.
So we have a salesman who lies, who'd have thunk it!0
