Glass fell off drivers side mirror
On my way to work this morning, doing 70mph on the motorway, the glass on my drivers side mirror decided to fly off in search of a better life no doubt.
I've just ordered a replacement glass off eBay (my local halfords couldn't get one til Friday anyway so figured might as well save some money and wait for one off eBay), but just wondering where I stand with being able to drive the car whilst I wait for the replacement glass to arrive.

If had been the passenger side you'd have been fine, but drivers side is compulsory.0

Obligatory mirror options are:
a. an exterior mirror fitted to the offside (right-hand side when seated in the driver's seat), or
b. an exterior mirror fitted to the nearside (left hand side when seated in the driver's seat), or
c. an interior mirror.
All goods vehicles must have two mirrors, one of which must be option 'a'.
Passenger vehicles with no more than 7 passenger seats first used before 1 August 1978 must have any one of the above options.0 -

Unfortunately overriden by EU Directive 2003/97, annex III, which requires the external mirrors to be fitted.0 -
Someone ought to tell VOSA then.
Current regs are

Assuming your car was first used after July 1978 the driver's external mirror is compulsory, along with either an interior or passenger side one.
That said, it's really NOT worth worrying about. Just pay extra attention to shoulder checks until it's sorted. Or, if you're feeling really paranoid, go to the pound shop. buy a cheap shaving mirror, and stick it on with double sided tape. As far as the law's concerned, a mirror is a mirror!0 -
