Full time student/earning money

Options
Hello

Hope I'm posting in the right section. I'm a full time (medical) student, 19yrs old. My mother doesn't work (is disabled) and my father was made redundant from his company a year ago. Since then he hasn't been able to find work which is probably due more to his age. At this stage they have no savings and next to nothing income. I am entitled to the full loan for my studies, while this is good it is not enough to live on etc and I need to earn some extra income. I am hoping to buy and sell some items on e bay (it would suit my full time course) Can anyone help with this. I have no idea how much (if any) that I will earn. Is there a limit to what I can earn ? Does it effect my students loans in any way ? How much can I earn before tax and then at what rate. If anyone needs ask me any more please do as I am keen to get this started and need more information. Thank you for reading.

Doesn't affect your loans as not repaid until you start full time work and earn enough

You'll have to register as a business seller if you're buying stuff to sell on. Have you looked into what that involves?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Thank you for your replies. Yes, I will register as a business seller but, so far, I can't get any information on the effect of student loans, but would still appreciate any more information on that. I know there are different amount of loans eg my elder sister got less as my parents were earning a lot more when she was at University, unlike now. I was just wondering would any income I earn (like my parents) effect my amount of loan, but from Browntoa's post it possibly doesn't. Appreciate the replies from everyone.

    And thanks for the link/tax
  • Loans and grants are calculated based on household income and any money you earn would not affect your entitlement, in fact it makes sense for most students to get a part-time job (although I knew a few with full-time jobs) even whilst they are studying full-time as the loans/grants don't usually cover basic cost of living (I am aware that medical students typically have far less free time than the rest of us by the way).

It sounds like you would be entitled to the full loan/grant and any other income will not be taken into consideration.
Apologies for any typos, my phone can't handle the forums.

Thanks for all the replies. Feeling more reassured about this now, my doubts were about the self employed part as I know many who have part time jobs, it just felt different territory and yes medical students have very little time off another reason why I want to go down my own route.

By the way, if anyone has the time (or inclination) to answer, how on earth do you log out of this site ?? I've searched everywhere but must be missing something - or have I landed in Hotel California :)

Depending on your uni, go and look round the psychology dept - they often have well paid studies which may give pocket money and can be timed to suit you.
Other jobs are sometimes available on campus.
I would not rely on a single source of income like selling on ebay as the money coming in may be erratic.
    Good luck.

Your earnings will not have an impact on your loan. My son studied medicine, as during placement he was only in the hospital/GP surgery five days a week the other two he worked as a bank healthcare assistant, when he wasn't on his placement he sometimes worked three or four days. This gave him plenty to live on and he ended up with a decent amount saved.

While he wasn't training to be a nurse the experience of being a HCA and patient interaction was very good.
